BA&DF is a leading fair for Belgian art and design taking place at Arsenaal, Gentbrugge from 19 to 22 October 2023. BA&DF aims to be a unique, idiosyncratic platform for Belgian art and design.

Through three open calls, BA&DF gives young artists and designers a chance to show their work. The works will be shown at the fair but will also be included in BA&DF’s social media channels, website, and programme. 

For whom?

  • You are an artist or designer
  • You are in your final year of studies or have graduated no longer than 5 years ago
  • You study or work in Belgium

How to participate?

  • Register via ba-df.be/youngtalent.

  • Enter your name, the date and title of your work, and your study programme or discipline if applicable.

  • You will then receive a code for digital submission.

  • Send a digital file containing images and an explanation of your work(s). Also send a short description along to content@ba-df.be with the subject line: YOUNG TALENT.

  • The deadline for submitting your work(s) is 15 July 2023.

  • Want to submit more works? This is possible. In that case you will receive multiple codes.

Selection

  • A maximum of 10 works will be chosen. Three top candidates will receive an extra prominent place.

  • The curators of BA&DF will act as jury.

  • Candidates will be selected based on the work submitted.

  • Each work will be judged based on authenticity, the link to the theme of transformation, topicality, and technical mastery.

  • Multiple works are allowed if each is accompanied by a dossier.

  • The selection process will be completely anonymous.

Format

The participating artists or designers have complete freedom in terms of shape, material, style and dimensions. We are looking for both two- and three-dimensional work, it may be old or new, existing, or adapted, even a ‘work in progress’.

  • Want to submit more works? This is possible. In that case you will receive multiple codes.

  • Candidates will be selected based on the work submitted.

  • Multiple works are allowed if each is accompanied by a dossier.

Format

We are looking for video of minimum 1 minute and maximum 15 minutes that can be shown on its own and through one video channel. Think of short films, experimental video, digital moving images, collages with sound, video clips, animations, and the like.

 

The submitted work may be old or new, existing, or adapted, even a work in progress.

For whom?

  • You are a student in an art or design discipline: for example (but not limited to) fine art, (interior) architecture, photography, textile design, …

Assignment

To design and make a table and a matching ‘centrepiece’ that fit the theme of ‘transformation’ in a relevant way. The designs and materials should be as sustainable and ecological as possible.

Designated dimensions

  • Height: between 72 and 78 cm

  • Rectangular: between 2 and 3 metres in length, between 0.8 and 1.2m in width

  • Square: between 1.5 and 2.4 metres

  • Round: between 1.5 and 2.4 metres

  • Other shapes are also allowed, considering the above dimensions

 

The tables must be functional, as they will be used in the bar area at BA&DF.

Black Series 7 chairs designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen (the famous ‘butterfly chair’) will be placed at the tables.

The designer, school and study direction of the tables will be mentioned in our social media, on our website and on the exhibition plan.

How to participate?

  • Enter your name, the date and title of your work, and your study programme or discipline if applicable.

  • You will then receive a code for digital submission.

  • Send your design to content@ba-df.be by 1 September 2023, with dimensions and choice of materials

  • Based on the submitted designs, our scenographer will set up the bar area.

  • Delivery and (if necessary) assembly by the school on 16 October 2023.

  • Collection on Monday, October 23, 2023.
